What to put in a tech pack for a knitwear factory

A tech pack tells the factory exactly what to make. A complete one means an accurate costing, fewer sample rounds and a bulk order that matches the approved sample. This is what we ask for when costing knitwear.

    1. Sketches

Flat front and back drawings, with close-ups of anything unusual: the neck finish, pocket shape, a split hem. Photos of a reference garment help too.

    2. Measurements

    • Each point of measure (chest, body length, sleeve length, neck width and so on) with how to measure it.
    • The base size, the size range and how sizes grade up and down.
    • Tolerances, for example ±1 cm on body measurements.

    3. Fabric

    • Composition, such as 100% combed cotton or 95% cotton 5% elastane.
    • Construction, such as single jersey, piqué or loopback French terry.
    • Weight in GSM with a tolerance. Our guide to GSM explains how to pick one.
    • Finishes, such as compacting to control shrinkage, brushing or an enzyme wash.
    • Any certification you need, such as GOTS or OCS.

    4. Colours

Pantone TCX references for every colourway, including rib and trims if they differ from the body. We send lab dips for approval before the bulk fabric is dyed.

    5. Artwork

Vector files for prints and embroidery, with the size, the placement measured from a fixed point (such as 8 cm below the neck seam), the technique and the ink or thread colours.

    6. Construction

Stitch and seam types (overlock, coverstitch hems, flatlock), the neckband and cuff finish, and any taping or reinforcement.

    7. Trims and labels

    • Main label, size label and care label, with fibre content, care symbols and country of origin.
    • Hang tags, drawcords and tips, zips, buttons and press studs.
    • Where each label goes and how it's attached.

    8. Packing

How each piece is folded and bagged, any polybag warning text your retailer requires, pieces per carton, the size ratio in each carton, and carton markings.

    9. Quantities, price and date

The quantity per colour and per size, your target price, and when you need the goods in your warehouse. Our minimum is 300 pieces per style, with at least 100 pieces per colour.
